I am new to trading, what do I need to know?

For novices, our Simple™ trading platform is the ideal way to start. Simple™ offers a safe trading environment, it is straightforward and focuses on risk controlled trading.

When you trade in Contracts for Difference (CFDs), as you do with invest.com, you are required to predict asset performance. Simple™ has graphs and a news feed so you can make informed predictions.

We recommend that you start slowly, with small amounts and that you never trade more than you can afford to lose. You can even practise before you trade to give you experience and confidence.

What happens if I need to access the money in a portfolio during the investment period?

It’s your money and we will never prevent you from accessing it. If you need to close a portfolio for any reason, you can do so at the click of a button. There are no fees for doing so.

Please note however, to protect you, your request will be checked by our compliance department.  Usually you will receive your money within 5 working days.

Please be aware that although you can invest up to [currency_sign]2000 before you complete full registration, you have to complete the process before you can withdraw funds. This is to safeguard against money laundering and is required by financial regulations.

I have been informed that my account is a ‘retail account’, what does this mean?

The majority of our customers are classified as retail customers and their accounts are retail accounts.
If you have a retail account, this means that you are entitled to a higher level of protection than professional customers. For example, this could include getting more information about services, investments and costs as well the safeguarding of financial instruments and funds.
This is because we do not assume retail customers have the experience, knowledge and expertise to make their own investment decisions or accurately assess investment risk.

Do I need to provide documentation when I register? If so, which documents and how can I send them?

Yes, you do need to provide some documentation, you can see a full list below. As the process is straightforward, it usually only takes a few minutes.

How to send documents

  • You can send us photos taken from a mobile phone as long as the image is clear and shows the document in its entirety, including the edges. You can also scan documents if you prefer.
  • Either upload the documents to our website by logging in and clicking on the ‘complete registration’ button at the top or, if you prefer, email them to support@invest.com.

Documents you need to send

1. Proof of identity

  • This can be a copy of your current passport.
  • It must be valid for at least 3 months, have a clear photo of your face, show your name and have a unique number (such as a passport number).

2. Proof of address

  • This can be a copy of a utility bill from the last 3 months, such as water, electricity, gas, telephone bills, bank statement or a letter issued from a recognised public authority.
  • It must contain your name and current residential address on the date of issue.

In addition, if you are depositing by credit card we will also require

3. A copy of your credit card

  • Both sides of your credit card.
  • Front of card – we recommend you hide your credit card number apart from the last 4 digits, we also need to see your name and the card’s expiry date.
  • Back of card – we need to see the back of your credit card, apart from the last three digits (the credit card verification or CVV, which we recommend you hide.

4. A signed deposit confirmation document

  • We will send you this by email if we need you to sign and return it to us.

Usually the registration process is quick and straightforward, however if you have any questions, you are always welcome to contact us for assistance.

How do I register?

The registration process is designed to be quick and easy while ensuring we comply with financial regulations.
Step one
After you click on the blue ‘Register’ button you will be asked to provide some basic information including your name, email, country of residence and phone number.
Step two
You will be directed to a questionnaire which asks you for additional personal details and some basic information about your finances and trading experience. It usually takes about 5 minutes to complete.
Once you have answered the questions you can deposit funds into your account.
Step three
After you make your first deposit you have 15 days to upload your proof of identity and address, this is required by financial regulations so we can verify your identity. If you deposit £2,000 or under, you will be able to start investing straight away.

What are the benefits of portfolio management with invest.com?

Are my data and money secure?

Very. We maintain the highest standards of security. We use the most advanced SSL encryption, featuring the highest possible encryption levels to protect your data, account and online transactions. We store all data on servers in a secure facility and continually audit our systems.

What do I need to consider before I start investing with invest.com?

There are a few simple factors to consider.

  1. Firstly, a basic rules of investing is not to put all your eggs in one basket, this is known as diversification. To maintain a diversified overall investment portfolio, we recommend that you invest no more than 50% of your liquid assets with invest.com.
  2. Your investment goals.  When you receive a portfolio recommendation, the investment period is an essential part of the equation. Even though you can easily close a portfolio before the investment period ends, this isn’t recommended. You can open a portfolio for each of your financial goals so funds become available as and when you need them, having made optimal return.
  3. Your appetite for risk. Risk / reward ratio is essential when investing. When you receive a personalised portfolio recommendation a number of the questions we ask are to get a clear   understanding of your risk appetite, which may not be the same for each of your investment goals. If you are independently investing in strategies, pay attention to the risk value of each strategy and think about diversifying this risk by investing in strategies with different risk levels.
  4. Finally, make sure you understand our minimum investment requirements. You need to invest a minimum of £1,500 for to receive a portfolio recommendation using our robo-adviser or £500 to invest in a strategy. Also make sure you understand our fee structure so you know exactly how much you can expect to pay.

What is CFD trading? What are the advantages and disadvantages of CFD trading?

CFD stands for Contracts for Difference and involves an agreement to exchange the difference in the value of an asset between the time a trade is entered and exited. The asset is never owned by the trader.

There are a number of advantages to trading in CFDs.

You have a full range of assets to trade in, including currencies, commodities, indices and shares.

Profit can be made when the value of a trade goes up or down. This is because when trading in CFDs, the trader predicts direction, whether the value of an asset will go up or down, and an accurate prediction will make profit. invest.com provides real time market information and news, so you can make informed predictions.

Trades can be leveraged which can increase the value of the trade without investing more funds. This can significantly increase profit potential. A disadvantage to this however is that it also increases risk. This is why our Simple™ platform for novices has strong risk control features and Pro has features including advanced charting, fast execution and outstanding transparency.

The fee structure for CFDs can be complicated, this is why we focus on straightforward commission in Simple™ and competitive buy and sell spreads on Pro.

What is leveraged trading?

Leverage is a function of CFD and forex trading which enables you to significantly increase the value of a trade. Small price movement can result in both high returns and significant losses in leveraged trading.

As leveraged trading becomes increasingly popular it becomes more important that traders understand its risks, as well as its advantages.

Take the following example. You invest £50 in an asset, a 1% change in price will generate a profit or loss of £0.50. If your trade is leveraged by 50:1, it will become worth 50 times more and a 1% increase or decrease in asset price will result in a profit or loss of £25.50.

As a regulated financial services provider, we have measures in place to promote responsible trading.

Trading in Pro
The default leverage is set at 1:50. This became a regulatory requirement on 30th January 2017.

Please contact us if you wish to adjust your default. We will soon introduce a new feature which will let you adjust leverage in the click of a button.

When you register we ask you a series of questions to determine your trading experience and knowledge. If your answers indicate that you do not have sufficient trading skills, your leverage will be capped at 1:200.

You cannot incur a negative balance. This means that your losses will never exceed the amount in your account.

Trading in Simple™

As Simple™ is designed for novice traders, it offers limited leverage and caps losses to the amount in your trade.

What are the fees for portfolio management?

Fees include a portfolio management fee and a performance fee.

Portfolio management fees are paid monthly, there are 2 different fee rates. The fee rate is set according to the total amount you have invested (paid into) in your open portfolios.

•    Under £10,000 you will pay a 1.5% annual fee, this is paid at 0.124% a month.
•   £10,000 or over you will pay a 0.99% annual fee, this is paid 0.082% a month.

When you open your first portfolio you won’t pay management fees for the first three months.

The performance fee is a quarterly fee of 15%. You only pay a performance fee on total profits.

How are management fees calculated?

Management fees are paid on the total value of your open portfolios, also known as assets under management, and are paid monthly.

There are 2 fee rates. The fee rate is set according to how much you have invested (paid into) in your open portfolios.

•    If you  have invested under £10,000 you will pay a monthly fee of 0.124% based on an annual fee of 1.5%
•    If you have invested £10,000 or more you will pay a monthly fee of 0.082% based on an annual fee of 0.99%

For example, you open a portfolio with an initial investment of £5,000 and a monthly contribution of £200. This is your only portfolio.

For the first 25 months your fee rate will be fixed at 1.5% annually, paid monthly at 0.124%.

From the 26th month your fee rate will be automatically reduced to 0.99%, paid monthly at 0.082% as you have now invested a £10,000.

Likewise, if you open a second portfolio after 10 months with an initial investment of £3,000 your fee rate will automatically be reduced. This is because the total amount you have invested in both your first and second portfolio has reached £10,000.

How are performance fees calculated?

Performance fees are deducted quarterly and are set at 15% of total profit. They are only deducted if your portfolio has made a profit and any losses have been recovered. This means, that even if your portfolio made a profit in a quarter but hasn’t returned to its highest peak so far, you won’t pay performance fees. Take the example below.

You open a portfolio with an initial investment of £10,000:
At the end of the 1st quarter it is worth £10,500 – you pay a performance fee
At the end of the 2nd quarter it is worth £10,390 – you don’t pay a performance fee
At the end of the 3rd quarter £10,490 – you don’t pay a performance fee
At the end of the 4th quarter it is worth £11,000 – you pay a performance fee

Performance fees are calculated after management fees have been deducted so you only pay on total profits.

How do I pay my portfolio management and performance fees?

You don’t have to worry about paying fees as they are deducted directly from your portfolios.

We offer full transparency. You can always see all details of your portfolios, including information about fees. If you have any questions about any aspect of your portfolios you can always contact us.

Are there any other costs or charges associated with my portfolios?

No. The fees cover all aspects of your portfolio management, including rebalancing, trading, adding contributions, opening and closing portfolios. There are no other costs or charges associated with managing your portfolios.

What are the fees for trading?

Simple™ has straightforward and transparent commission for each trade. You can see exactly what each trade will cost you as you set the trade settings.

Pro has competitive buy and sell spreads which are suited for experienced traders.

We think this fee system is fair for both novice and experienced traders.

What is remote technical assistance? Is it safe?

Sometimes the best way to solve a problem is to have someone show you what to do.  Remote technical assistance allows a member of our support team to connect to your computer with your permission and use their keyboard and mouse to solve any issues you are having. All sessions are password protected, encrypted and when ended cannot be restarted. We use secure data channels and privacy protection.

Remote technical assistance is safe when you allow someone you trust to connect to your computer.

At invest.com, we will only use this service to help you solve a specific problem that we cannot easily help solve with an explanation. We will not access any other part of your computer and will not ask you to tell us any of your passwords.

In general, we recommend that when you do use remote technical assistance, you watch what is being done on your screen and you ensure that the session is ended before leaving your computer.

How can I deposit money into my account?

It is easy to deposit money into your account. Currently we accept Visa, MasterCard, Diners, Maestro and Discover credit cards, as well as bank transfer.

You can also transfer funds through online payment services providers SOFORT (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Hungary, United Kingdom, France, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Poland, Spain or Switzerland) or iDEAL (the Netherlands).

To deposit funds into your account, just

  • Log in
  • Click on the ‘deposit’ button
  • Select your payment method and amount

If you deposit by credit card, your account will be updated immediately and we will send you an email.

If you transfer funds via bank transfer, we will update you as soon as we receive your money both by email and by updating your account.  This may take a few days, depending on which bank you use.

How can I withdraw money from my account?

It’s quick and simple to withdraw funds from your invest.com account. Just

1. Login to your account
2. Open the menu in ‘My invest’ and click on ‘Withdraw’
3. Tell us how much you want to withdraw

Remember, we can only authorise withdrawals once we have received and verified the documents required to register.

We will begin to process your withdrawal immediately or within one working day at the latest and will use the same payment method you used to deposit funds into your account.

Credit card
We will return the amount initially deposited to your credit card. Any profits will be sent be bank transfer. We will need to receive a copy of a document issued from your bank containing your bank’s name, address, IBAN and swift code as well as your name to transfer any profits.

Bank transfer
We will wire your money to the bank account you used to deposit.
Please note that there is a charge for each bank transfer. The amount depends on a number of factors including amount, currency and destination bank and is usually no more than €30. In some cases banks may have additional charges, however we will not charge beyond this. We keep you updated with the status of your withdrawal request by email.
We cannot transfer funds to a third party.

Can I open an Islamic account?

Yes, you can open an Islamic account when you register. If you want to switch a regular account to an Islamic account, please contact us so we can help you.

Our Islamic accounts comply with Sharia law while allowing full trading. They have no swap charges (overnight interest charges) and positions expire after 30 days. Please note, trades have wider spreads than standard accounts.
